If you've ever bought a greens powder or any other all-in-one supplement, you might have noticed that many labels lack precise quantities of individual ingredients. Instead, you'll find formulations like "Proprietary Blend" or "Premium Blend" with a total quantity – but no breakdown of how much of each component is actually included. This practice is widespread in the supplement industry, but it raises an important question: what's really in your daily shake?
In this article, you'll learn what proprietary blends are, why manufacturers use them, and what to look out for when choosing a product designed to support your health and well-being. We'll also show you why full transparency – as with Pure Greens™ from Rebuilt Performance – is the better way.
What are Proprietary Blends?
A "Proprietary Blend" is a combination of ingredients where the manufacturer only states the total amount of the blend but does not disclose the exact quantities of individual ingredients. On the label, you might see, for example:
"Antioxidant Complex (3000 mg): Spirulina, Chlorella, Kale, Matcha, Acai"
So, you know there's a total of 3000 mg of this blend, but not whether 2900 mg of it is cheap kale and only 100 mg is valuable spirulina – or vice versa. This lack of transparency makes it impossible to assess the product's actual efficacy.
While manufacturers argue that proprietary blends are meant to protect their "secret formulas," there are deeper reasons for this practice – and not all of them are in the consumer's best interest.
Why do Manufacturers Hide Their Dosages?
There are several reasons why companies resort to proprietary blends. Some are legitimate, others less so:
Cost Savings through Cheap Fillers
The most common reason is financial. High-quality ingredients such as fermented vitamins, organic spirulina, or standardized plant extracts are expensive. If a manufacturer doesn't have to disclose how much of each ingredient is included, they can add tiny amounts of expensive ingredients and primarily fill the blend with cheap fillers.
The label then looks impressive – 20 different "green" ingredients! – but in reality, you're only getting symbolic amounts of the valuable components, far below effective dosages.
Flexibility in Production
Proprietary blends allow manufacturers to change their formulas between different batches without having to adjust the label. If the price of an ingredient increases, they can simply reduce it and replace it with a cheaper alternative – the consumer remains unaware.
Concealment of Ineffective Dosages
Many herbal ingredients require certain minimum amounts to have any effect at all. Scientific studies show, for example, that spirulina in amounts below 1000 mg per serving offers hardly measurable benefits. With a proprietary blend, a manufacturer can prominently feature spirulina on the label without having to admit that only 50 mg are included.
Protection from Imitation
The only legitimate reason: Some companies genuinely want to prevent competitors from copying their carefully developed formulations. However, even this reason is questionable, as truly innovative recipes can be protected by patents – transparent information is therefore also possible here.
What Does an Ingredient List Really Reveal?
To understand if a greens product is worth its money, you need to learn to read between the lines. Here are some red flags:
The Order of Ingredients
Ingredients must be listed in descending order by weight. If the most valuable ingredients in a proprietary blend are at the very end, they are likely only present in trace amounts.
Unrealistically Many Ingredients
A product with 40 different ingredients in a 5-gram serving sounds impressive but is mathematically impossible if each ingredient is to be present in an effective amount. Do the math: 5000 mg divided by 40 ingredients averages only 125 mg per ingredient – far too little for most botanicals.
Missing Information on Extraction Ratios
For plant extracts, it makes a huge difference whether it's pure powder or a concentrated extract. A "4:1 extract" means that 4 kg of raw material were processed into 1 kg of extract. Without this information, you don't know what you're really getting.
Pure Greens: Full Transparency Instead of Secrecy
At Rebuilt Performance, we have deliberately decided against proprietary blends. Pure Greens™ contains no hidden mixtures – every single ingredient is listed on the label with its exact dosage.
Developed in the Dr. Graner Lab
Pure Greens™ was developed in the renowned Dr. Graner Lab, where nutritionists and biochemists create evidence-based formulations. Each ingredient was chosen at a dosage based on scientific findings – not on marketing promises or cost calculations.
